Mouth of the Tyne: Full festival programme revealed

The full programme of entertainment has been released for this year’s Mouth of the Tyne Festival, organised by North Tyneside Council.

The event runs from July 6-9 and highlights include spectacular outdoor concerts from Gabrielle, Siouxsie, Paul Heaton, and The Proclaimers, performances from some of the world’s best street entertainers, and a colourful parade featuring hundreds of local schoolchildren.

Tynemouth Front Street will be home to spellbinding acts from around the world, a jazz stage, and a pop-up silent disco where up to 100 people at a time can dance the day away.

The outdoor arts programme features an army of street performers including battling butlers, comedy jugglers, acrobats on a 15ft tall wheel and a seven-metre-high rotating hourglass. Some shows will be signed by a British Sign Language interpreter.

Saturday morning sees a huge community parade on a birthday theme with costumes ranging from giant jellies, dancing French fancies, hedgehogs, piles of presents, and party animals of every sort.

Over at Tynemouth Station, the popular weekend market will run alongside a community stage, arts activities, and a special area for under 5s and their families.

North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Dame Norma Redfearn DBE, said: “We’re all really looking forward to this year’s festival as there’s so much to see and do.

“It’s an incredible location for the event and I know there’ll be a great many people excited to be part of it, either participating or visiting.”

Gabrielle’s sold-out show on Sunday 9 July features local artists Big Red and The Grinners, Lily Brooke and Jen and Liv, a duo who discovered their love for performing whilst busking in Newcastle three years ago.

The festival was established in 2005 and is one of the region’s biggest arts events, attracting over 100,000 visitors each year.

Visitors are encouraged to use public transport for their festival journey with Tynemouth’s Metro station being right in the middle of the action.

Mouth of the Tyne Festival is organised by North Tyneside Council and supported by Capita, Shop NT and Port of Tyne.
