Radio Shields carries a wide variety of content, catering to both mainstream and niche musical genres. We broadcast interviews, hourly news updates, sports, talk, and comedy-based shows. Since September 2019, our project has enabled over 20 different shows to broadcast, with a small number of long-running shows also. The stations are frequently broadcasted live from a variety of locations across the area, operating training for people who want to explore the radio airwaves. This can be done by both local volunteers or community groups. Radio Shields will be available to an estimate of over 360,000 people across Tynemouth, South Shields, and the surrounding areas/towns in between. We expect transmissions to start from September 2021!
Prior to the formation of the project leading to the launch of Radio Shields NE, many individuals have been involved in a number of Restricted Service License (RSL’s) broadcasts. This took place in Newcastle upon Tyne, granted by Ofcom. Many of these were operated by or involved founding members of Radio Shields NE. These included NE1fm (Newcastle & Gateshead’s first full-time FM community radio station), ACE Radio, Youth Voice FM, YVFM, West End Broadcast, and City FM.
We provide experience and training in broadcast and media skills; promoting education, pathways to employment opportunities, and interpersonal skills such as confidence, team building, and motivational skills.
We work with people from the community including the unemployed, lone parents, disabled, faith groups, vulnerable adults, schools, local businesses, and start-up companies, charities, and social interest groups.
We have a comprehensive training package that teaches all aspects of radio such as: producing, editing, presenting, and technical.
As a community business, we rely solely on the support of volunteers to keep the station live and active. Because of this, we are constantly looking for people to join us in all aspects of radio. As well as “on-air” there are also many other areas to get involved with including marketing, live events, technical, and general administration.
