About Us
Radio Shields is a community radio station serving North and South Tyneside. We broadcast live from our state-of-the-art studios at the Pride Media Centre in Pelaw.
We broadcast locally on DAB (Digital) Radio, and worldwide via our website, dedicated ‘Affinity Media’ mobile apps and smart-speakers such as Amazon Alexa.
Programmes
During the day we play a wide variety of music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and now! Our presenters live and breathe the local area and keep abreast of all the latest local news, events and happenings so they can keep you informed.
We interview decision makers and hold them to account on your behalf. We also speak to some of the most interesting people in the North East so you can hear their stories and what makes them so fascinating.
We broadcast live some of the biggest events in North and South Tyneside. Previous shows have been brought from South Shields Market Place, the annual fireworks display on the sea front and even when the circus came to town!
National and international news stories are included in headlines every hour.
On weekends and evenings we have some of the most knowledgeable and passionate specialist music presenters showing off their love of all sorts of genres, including indie, ska & reggae, country and dance.
DAB Digital Radio
From Saturday 11th December we are proud to be broadcasting live on DAB+ Digital Radio.
It’s part of a UK first as Tynemouth and South Shields have won the race to roll out the first of the country’s brand-new type of DAB radio system.
Teesside-based firm Red Army Group (formally MuxOne) has switched on the UK’s first permanent small-scale DAB transmission system that has given Tyneside 30+ new radio stations to the region.
UK communications regulator Ofcom has spent the last ten years planning and trialing the new digital radio infrastructure that will eventually see over 200 systems across the UK offering thousands of DAB radio stations.
The station welcomed Award winning TV presenter Pam Royle, South Tyneside Council leader, Tracey Dickson and Ex Customs House managing Director Ray Spencer to mark the occasion alongside Affinity Media NE CIC CEO, Kyle Scott.
Volunteering
Like all community radio stations, Radio Shields relies on volunteers to manage the station and produce shows. The station is always looking for new volunteers to take on a number of responsibilities.
To ensure that experiences are rewarding and satisfying for volunteers and the station as a whole, we insist that all members, regardless of experience, complete a training programme by an experienced member of the team and volunteer at the station before presenting a programme.
We welcome people from all backgrounds and communities, regardless of previous experience or education levels. All you need is enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to learn. In return, you’ll develop skills including broadcasting and production techniques, as well as broader skills which you can transfer to the workplace or your next volunteering role.
As well as on-air roles, there are also many other areas to get involved with, including marketing, live events, technical, and general administration.
Advertising
We offer a range of advertising packages which are suitable for organizations, sole traders and small and medium-sized companies. Find out more about advertising on Radio Shields and speak to one of our sales team.
The DAB radio service has a potential reach of over 380,000 adults from its Cleadon transmission site.
We rely on grants, advertising revenue, and donations to provide 24/7 community service.
