North Tyneside Social Workers shortlisted for top national award

Two social workers from North Tyneside Council have been shortlisted for a prestigious national award in recognition of their extraordinary practice.  

Kelly Arrowsmith and Demi Sherman, who both worth in the Council’s ‘outstanding’ Children’s Services, have been selected as finalists for the Supporting Children in Education Award in the Social Worker of the Year Awards 2023.

Kelly and Demi work in the authorities’ 14+ Team, supporting vulnerable young people to help them succeed at school and in their everyday lives.

Their jobs have a real impact on people’s lives. From supporting young people with special educational needs and disabilities to receive the best possible provision to being an advocate for them, the do vital work that helps residents get the best outcomes.

The recognition comes from their colleague who praises their ‘determination’ and ‘compassion’, and her nomination has secured them both a spot in the top three.

They’re two of only three finalists in the Supporting Children in Education Award category and will find out who has won at a special awards ceremony in London on Friday 3 November.

Supported by Coventry City Council, the Supporting Children in Education Award recognises social workers who have undertaken exceptional individual and/or strategic work to support children’s attendance at school throughout the pandemic and beyond.

Peter Hay CBE, Chair of the Social Work Awards, said: “This year we received the most entries ever which goes to show organisations and individuals are keen to shine a light on the inspirational achievements of an often-overlooked profession. We would like to thank all those who took the time to nominate a friend, colleague, or team for an award this year.

“To our finalists, we’d like to say congratulations! Being nominated for a national award, whilst supporting others during very challenging times, is a remarkable achievement of which you should be very proud.” 

Cllr Peter Earley, Cabinet Member responsible for supporting and protecting children at North Tyneside Council said: “We’re all immensely proud of Kelly and Demi for this fantastic achievement which is a true testament to the unwavering support and dedication they show each and every day in their roles.

“Social workers play a vital role in our communities; they are often a lifeline for our families and children and young people and provide support when people need it the most. To be recognised for the brilliant contributions they both make to support children’s attendance at school is something we’re delighted to celebrate.

“I wish them both the best of luck on the night.”
