The Great British Spring Clean returns for 2023

The Great British Spring Clean is back again for its eighth year and as always, our aim is to make North Tyneside a cleaner and greener place to live.

The campaign runs from Friday 17 March until Sunday 2 April and this year’s theme is about celebrating our #LitterHeroes and the pride they have for their community.

We are carrying out various initiatives to maintain the cleanliness of the borough, with additional staff out litter picking alongside volunteers, community groups, and school children.

We’re deploying an additional environmental hit squad on March 17, 24, and 31 to target contaminated recycling bins in hotspot areas.

And we continue to run our educational campaigns around litter management, working with The Princes Trust and NUFC Foundation, and helped by our environmental mascots Waldo, Dotty, and their arch-nemesis Litterbug.

We have supported Cullercoats Collective and the Whitley Bay Community Clean Team to organise a big litter pick on Saturday 18 March. Volunteers are invited to meet opposite Cullercoats Crescent Club at 10am and all equipment will be provided.

Sandra Graham, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “We all want to live in a green, clean, and attractive North Tyneside and just as we do in our own homes, the idea of a big spring clean feels very satisfying, as the warmer weather approaches.

“Most people in our communities make a very positive contribution to keeping the borough looking its best, and we have some wonderful voluntary groups who help to keep our communities clean and tidy.

“Together we will tackle fly-tipping and littering. We really appreciate the support they give to our hard-working staff, and we are always happy to support them in return by providing high visibility vests, bags, and litter pickers, as well as helping with publicity and taking away any litter they collect. Thanks to everyone involved.”
